Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd. (Foxconn) has reached out to Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., expressing interest in acquiring its controlling stake. Foxconn, which has been heavily investing in factories for electric vehicle (EV) production, is interested in acquiring the entire Nissan company, not just its factories and equipment. Luo Run, the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) leading Foxconn's EV business, was once a senior executive at Nissan. As a means to participate in Nissan's operations, Foxconn has targeted the Nissan shares held by Renault Group in a trust bank. Renault temporarily transferred some of its Nissan shares to a French trust bank as part of a phased sale. Currently, 22.8% of Nissan's shares are held in the trust bank.
According to the latest data from Omdia, Microsoft has become the largest buyer of NVIDIA's flagship Hopper chips, far outpacing other tech giants. Microsoft has purchased 485,000 Hopper chips this year, more than double the amount bought by Meta, NVIDIA's second-largest customer in the U.S., which purchased 224,000 chips. Additionally, Microsoft's procurement outpaces Amazon and Google, which bought 196,000 and 169,000 Hopper chips respectively. Tesla and xAI, together, purchased slightly more chips than Amazon. According to Omdia, ByteDance and Tencent have each ordered around 230,000 NVIDIA chips this year, including H20 chips.
Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reports that Apple Inc. has abandoned its planned hardware subscription service. The service was intended to allow users to "subscribe" to a new iPhone annually by paying a monthly fee. This service aimed to assist consumers who could not afford the high cost of an iPhone upfront by offering a monthly payment option. After two years of project work, Apple terminated the development of this project in recent months due to regulatory concerns, software vulnerabilities, and other issues. The team responsible for developing the subscription service has been disbanded and reassigned to other projects.
OpenAI has provided users with a new way to interact with its chatbot ChatGPT: a toll-free number starting with 1-800. OpenAI states that users in the United States can dial 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) to have a free 15-minute conversation with the chatbot each month. Users in other countries can interact with the chatbot by sending messages to the same number using WhatsApp. This new option aims to democratize artificial intelligence globally.
